Competitions

Competitions play a vital role in culinary arts as they continually raise the standards of culinary excellence. There is no better way for a culinarian to hone their craft than by putting their skills and knowledge to the test in a competitive format.

Participation in ACF approved competitions will also earn you continuing education hours for ACF certification.

The WSCA hosts ACF sanctioned competitions on a regular basis and also enjoys hosting local culinary competitions to promote the Washington Culinary scene.

Each year schools from around the country participate in the Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl (jeopardy of the culinary arts!). Schools compete on a regional level to gain the chance to compete nationally at the ACF National Convention. If your school is interested in competing, click here for more information.

Dear Culinarians,

Another tremendous year for competitions, our culinarians from around the region garnered more than 60 medals! Great job! We are all very proud of your hard work and dedication to our craft. I would like to take this moment to thank all those involved in the competition.

May 2014 – ACF Culinary Salon Competition

The WSCA completed their annual culinary salon on May 17th, 2014. Congratulations to all competitors for a job well done. Thanks to Le Cordon Bleu and Chef Sohonie for hosting the competition.  Thanks to Members Janet Waters, Mimi Stockmann, Mathew Dimeo and all the student volunteers from Bellingham Technical College. Thanks to Judges Chef Shawn Hanlin, Chef Doug Fisher, Chef John Fisher, and Chef Woojay Poytner. The competition was a wonderful success and opportunity for members and non-members to compete in a variety of categories, Competitors came from as a far away as Idaho, San Diego and Utah.

January 2014 – Student Hot Food Competition

On January 18th, 2014 the WSCA held their student hot food competition at Le Cordon Bleu Seattle. The winner will represent Washington state at the ACF Western regional Conference in Oakland, Ca March 1st through the 6th. The teams competing were Bellingham Technical College, Le Cordon Bleu, Seattle, and Walla Walla Community College. All teams did an excellent job pushing through the stress and timelines of the competition. There were some wonderful skill sets demonstrated by all teams.  Le cordon Bleu received a Bronze Medal, Walla Walla received a bronze medal and Bellingham technical college received a Silver. Bellingham technical college will represent the state at the Western Regional Conference. Congratulation to all, and good luck Bellingham at regionals! May 2013 – Culinary Salon Competition

Our annual culinary salon was held May 4, 2013 at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. We want to thank all who participated to make this event possible. Our judges were Chefs John Fisher, Doug Fisher and Franz Popperal as well as Chef Roland Henin. In the F-1 Category earning gold medals were Michael Baldwin CEC, AAC, CCE (as well as in A-3), and Gilbert Roderiguez. Earning silver medals were Chris Bowens and Jeff Euteneier. In the K-9 category we had Kelly Sasuga with a silver medal, in category D Karen Neugebauer and Josh DoRion with bronze medals. In the student categories with bronze medals were Troy Jones, Aliccia Better, Christopher Davis, Connor Whaley, Kris Kim, Jordon Richendefer. Earning a silver was Christopher Ranwell. In the K-1 Category Anita Alten with a bronze and Kelly Sasuga with a gold. P-2 produced a silver for Ashareen Ritter and a gold for Marisela Vidala. Our toques off to these competitors. It takes a lot of personal time and energy to compete as well as nerves of steel. Congratulations again. To our many volunteers we could not have done it without you as well.

October 2010 – Crab Cake Competition

In October 2010 we had our first “Best of the Pacific Northwest” event, with Gold Sponsors Ocean Beauty  Seafoods and Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission providing all our  Dungeness Crab of the competition.  View more details  about this competition here

December 5, 2009 – Student Hot Team Competition

Congratulations to Renton Technical College for taking home the gold for Washington State at the Student Hot Team Competition which took place in Coos Bay, Oregon on December 5, 2009.  Click here for all the details. Kudos to Bellingham Technical College for a strong showing.  Renton will now compete for the state at the ACF Western Regional conference February 6-8, 2010 in New Mexico.  Go Team!
